THE Rosewood Lions have been collecting prescription glasses, sunglasses and hearing aids as part of the Australian Lions Recycle for Sight program.

The program involves Lions members from all over Australia who collect used and broken glasses, sunglasses and hearing aids. repairs are made where necessary and then the hearing and sight aids are donated to families in poverty stricken countries all over the world.

Rosewood Lion Tanya Johnson said the Club’s eyeglasses collection co-ordinator was Mike Golgerth.

“Mike goes above and beyond to collect all of the different items that are then inspected, cleaned and importantly graded before they are packed appropriately to be sent at no cost to the recipient,” she said.

“In the past 18 months, more than 10, 544 spectacles have been contributed by families in the Ipswich region, some which have been collected at local optometrist and medical facilities.

“It is a very rewarding feeling to know that this program is helping to assist families who may suffer with poor eyesight and other associated eye problems.”

In the Rosewood area, Mike visits the Rosewood and Walloon Pharmacies, the Rosewood Veterinary Clinic, the Rosewood Community Centre, the Rosewood Post Office and the Rosewood Lions Opportunity Shop, as well as other pharmacies within the Ipswich area.

“I am lost for words by the sheer number of used prescription glasses that Mike collects from the various facilities within the area,” Tanya said.

“Also, I am in awe with the generosity shown by the people who have donated, knowing that a simple act of kindness helps others, is incredible.”
