Four people including a two-year-old child were killed in Ipswich on Wednesday night in a horror head on car collision.
Police say a ford focus driven by a male in his 30s was travelling east in the westbound lanes of the Ipswich Motorway at Redbank Plains.
The vehicle collided with a four wheel drive carrying a woman and a man in their 30s as well as a two-year-old girl near Exit 31, just after 11pm.
Ipswich District Acting Inspector, Darren Green, said tragically all four people involved in the crash died on scene.
“The male driver of the ford focus was ejected from the vehicle some distance and pronounced deceased on the scene,” he said.
“Both vehicles subsequently caught fire and the occupants of the SUV were unable to exit the vehicle as a result the female driver, male passenger and sadly two-year-old child have passed away.”
Acting Inspector Green said it was unclear how long the sedan had been driving on the wrong side of the road, however police had received related road reports since the accident.
“Sadly, the first time we knew about [the car] was the crash,” he said.
Acting Inspector Green said investigations were still underway as to how the sedan came to be on the wrong side of the highway.
“We are actively encouraging anyone in the community who observed either of these vehicles or have dashcam footage to please come forward and assist with the investigation,” he said.
Inspector Green described the crash as ‘extremely graphic’ and said crews on scene had a difficult time identifying the SUV driver and passengers.
“Due to the nature of the crash it was very challenging,” he said.
“[It was] very confronting for the emergency services crews who attended that night.
“The first response crews and assisting crews did very well to identify the family members.
“It’s my understanding [the victims’ families] have all been contacted and advised of the situation.”
He said the members from the attending emergency crews would be offered support and have their welfare monitored in the coming days.
“I’ve seen a number of fatal crashes and as I said, this one was extremely confronting,” he said.
Police are still investigating if drugs, alcohol, speed or fatigue were involved in the crash.
Inspector Green confirmed all four people were from the area, however the parties from both cars weren’t suspected to have known each other.
He said the crash appeared to be a “very tragic set of circumstances”.
