Dolly’s Dream beneficiary of feature event

THE Elizabeth Boughen Memorial Youth Challenge will again be a feature event at the Rosewood Show.

This year, money raised in the challenge will go towards the Dolly’s Dream anti-bullying campaign.

Stud Beef Chief Steward Scott Tait runs the youth challenge.

“We do a fundraiser in conjunction with the competition and in the past we’ve raised money for the PA Research Foundation,” he said.

“This year we are raising money for Dolly’s Dream.”

Scott has been working hard to ensure the challenge is greeted with as much enthusiasm as it has been in the past two years.

“Elizabeth was a passionate local cattle breeder and judge and a former Rosewood Showgirl,” Scott said.

“She passed away unexpectedly from an auto-immune disease in 2023, two days before her 23rd birthday.

“Not long before that I’d asked her to take on the role of Chief Steward in the Stud Beef section.

“I know her parents and we thought of doing a closing in her honour, but it turned out to be something bigger.”

The challenge is a Junior Paraders and Judges competition.

“It’s held on the Friday so it can run as a separate event to the Stud Beef without rushing it and we try to make it educational.”

The youth challenge awards a young person for their skill, herdsmanship and enthusiasm.

“The challenge is open to young people aged under 23, so it’s more than just school children who take part,” he said.

“It’s judged on a combination of performance across Young Judges, Young Paraders and for showing exemplary herdsmanship.

“Herdsmanship is judged on animal welfare, presentation and overall conduct and attitude.

“For Young Judges, the competitors get to judge some animals to see who executes that the best.”

At the end, scores are combined to get an overall winner.

There is also a school award where the combined points are added and the best school overall wins a trophy.
