The Ipswich Jets secured a well earned 32-20 victory over the Brisbane Tigers (formerly Easts) at Langlands Park on Saturday evening in their Intrust Super Cup clash.
The return of inspirational club captain Nat Neale, after eight weeks on the sideline with a cheekbone fracture, and a standout two-try performance from edge forward Ben White was enough to help Ipswich grab the points, turning the tables on the Tigers from their previous clash earlier in the season where the Tigers comfortably handed the Jets a 36-14 defeat.
A low scoring first half this time round saw the scores locked at 6-all at the break before the Jets drew first blood early in the second half with dangerous centre Jordan Carriera spotting a gap and crossing for a try.
The lead was short lived however as the Tigers hit back hard with two converted tries and a penalty goal in quick succession giving them a lead of 20-12.
The Tigers kept control of the game until hardworking Ipswich backrower, White, crossed for the first of his two tries with fifteen minutes left on the clock.
A further try to powerful second-rower Blake Lenehan was soon followed by try number two to White who had a massive attacking game running for 194 metres.
As five-eighth Josh Cleeland (6/7) converted the try in a good night with the boot, the Jets now held a 30-20 lead with four minutes remaining and managed to hold their line intact before kicking a last minute Cleeland penalty goal to secure a great win after the unlucky draw and a last minute loss of recent weeks.
The return of Neale as well as lively utility Jayden Connors certainly appeared to lift Ipswich and with six rounds left the Jets will be desperately trying to claw their way back up the ladder after a poor start to the year as they head out west to Quilpie this weekend for their ‘Country Round’ clash against the Redcliffe Dolphins.
Young Jets Colts bow to Tigers
The Ipswich Jets Under 21 side went down by 40-18 to the Tigers in the Hastings Deering Colts clash.
After going try for try with the competition front runners in the first half, the scores were all tied up at 18-all at halftime.
With the Tigers coming home stronger, the score line certainly didn’t reflect the tight contest and the much improved effort from the young Jets.
With the majority of the Under 21 side only being under 19 years old, the young Jets will also be looking to gain momentum to finish their season on a high and will no doubt trouble the top sides next season.
