Rebel’s boxers prepare for the Golden Gloves
1 min read

REBEL’s boxers are ready to compete in the largest annual boxing event in Australia, the International Golden Gloves event at Acacia Ridge on August 18.

Coach Robbie Sbeghen said he will be taking a team of five athletes to the event all who have been working hard training and preparing to take their place in the ring.

“Livai Savuro is fighting in the 60 kilogram Lightweight and Joe Bennet will be in the 52-kilogram Bantamweight,” he said.

“Both boys recently returned from the National Titles where Livai won gold.

“This was a massive achievement for Livai, and a great achievement for both of them to compete at the titles, so I expect both of the boys to do well.

“Out of seven title fights they have won six, I know that they have what it takes when the going gets tough.”

And he anticipated other team members will also make a good showing.

“Andreas Rice and Noah Winthringham both achieved big wins at the Rebels Ipswich Championship.

“They will be dropping down in weight to the 63-kilogram Light Welterweight and the 71-kilogram Light Middleweight respectively.

“All of the boys are training up to four days a week, and we have been mixing the training up a bit with incorporating other gyms and trainers, things are falling into place and they are all in top form.”

Kane Tate is fighting in the 63.5-kilogram Open Elite Division. He is the only athlete who has fought in and won the Golden Gloves previously.

Kane said the Golden Gloves was a special event.

“All fights are difficult, competitors travel from all over Australia and overseas to fight in this international event,” Kane said.

“Golden Gloves has a ‘king of street cred’, and I know that the young children look up to anyone who has their name on the board, and if our Rebels Club can achieve this that would be great to see.”
