REBELS Boxing Club talent Max Cuthel is focused on defending his Australian Schoolboys title in Darwin next month after his latest success in the ring.
Year 10 student Max has just won his second Queensland title in the 42kg division at Mansfield.
Max defeated Gold Coast opponent Jarrod Baird comfortably in the semi-final before a split points decision win over Sunshine Coast fighter Xavier Garrao in the final.
Max won the title bout 3-2 over the three, two-minute rounds.
“He definitely needed a tough fight,” Walloon-based Rebels club trainer Robbie Sbeghen said.
“I’m extremely happy [with his progress].”
Max’s record is 11 wins and six losses.
He won his first Queensland title last year in the 40kg division.
Sbeghen said his teenage boxer was training hard, including adding light weights to his program to strengthen his muscles for his next challenge.
Max is also continuing his work as part of the Queensland Futures Squad for boxers as he was identified as having elite ability.
Max plans to fight in the 42kg class again in Darwin before moving up a weight division next year.
The skilful pugilist has another competition against some NSW boxers at Coolangatta this weekend (August 30) before setting his sights on the next Australian Schoolboys championships.
He won his first national title last year in Perth.
Warrior Boxing Gym coach and former international competitor Johnny Black was in Max’s corner during his latest fights.
Sbeghen said the Rebels and Springfield-based Warrior club often work together in preparing their best fighters.
