Watch Woogaroo koala Tanya in treetop home
1 min read

NATURE lovers were overjoyed at the weekend when they spotted a koala in the tree canopy at Woogaroo Forest.

This one – Tanya – (named after Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek) was observed in drone footage by environmentalist Russ Eley.

Tanya – possibly a mum with her joey – was seen on the 160ha block of bushland earmarked for 1,800 homes by Stockland.

An ecological assessment conducted on behalf of Stockland last year recorded no sightings of koalas, only evidence of scats.

Although the Precinct Plan was approved by the Council, it’s not over yet for Tanya and her pals.

The Save Woogaroo Forest Group believes there is definitely still hope for the bush.

"The Springfield Structure Plan is out of date; koalas have become more endangered; Ipswich City Council is failing to protect natural wildlife habitat in this region; and the Federal Government will see the undeniable logic in the group’s argument and stop the Springview Village development," a spokeswoman said.

The Save Woogaroo Forest Group now has a Save Woogaroo Forest Facebook page and urges anyone interested to search for it to get regular updates and join the conversation.

A ‘Save the Woogaroo Forest’ page is launched on Queensland Conservation Council’s (QCC) website where people can go to join the campaign and have their voices heard.
