WestMAC's cricket legacy features record partnerships

WEST Moreton Anglican College (WestMAC) has become the first school to win a record five consecutive TAS Champion cricket school titles, cementing a fine reputation in the sport.

WestMAC’s Head of Cricket Rob Hillier said the Senior Seconds, Intermediate Seconds and Thirds all achieved ladder leader status in their respective competitions.

“To have three of WestMAC’s five teams go through undefeated and win premierships is a sign of our depth, as well as our renowned WestMAC spirit of participation, no matter the challenges,’’ Hillier said.

“It is rewarding to see that our approach of giving students access to high-level training and specialist coaching, from junior years and onwards, has paid dividends with students achieving individual and team excellence.’’

Principal Geoff McLay praised the commitment and enthusiasm shown by WestMAC coaches and students over the past five years in establishing such an impressive cricketing legacy.

“At WestMAC we focus on developing players’ basic skills and a strong team culture by providing specialist and skilled coaches,” McLay said. “This strong WestMAC culture of support and team work has been evident throughout the past five years.’’

WestMAC’s First XI team achieved a podium finish, spearheaded by several star performances as well as an overall strong team contribution.

Opener Zac Fisher, a Met West representative, claimed the award for top scorer in the TAS First XI competition with 374 runs. That fine feat included two centuries highlighted by a season-high score of 204 runs against St John’s Anglican College. He finished with an average of 93.5 runs.

Fellow opener Zak Smith, another Met West representative, also achieved a standout season that included smashing a century against Canterbury College.

Captain and No.3 batter Fletcher Madden was also a strong contributor, highlighted by a century (121). Madden joined Fisher in a double-century partnership of 271 runs against St John’s Anglican College.

“Overall, we aim to ensure students not only learn cricket skills but also have fun,’’ Hillier said.

WestMAC boasts 16 sports, 34 extra-curricular programs and the College values of kindness, courage and engagement.
